As you know, COVID-19 has wreaked havoc with our personal, educational, and professional lives. Around the world, most government leaders have promoted the importance of public health and following scientifically-based guidelines for staying safe as individuals and in our families and communities. Hult campuses have adopted several of these practices. Fortunately, at least 3 companies have developed vaccines in record time that appear to be more than 90% effective and will be made available throughout the world in 2021. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/need-to-know.html
You have a relative (or friend) who distrusts vaccines and resents being told what to do. You believe that we all have a role to play to protect public health and that these vaccines are safe and effective. Using points from the TEDTalks linked below, describe 3 principles or ideas (and which TedTalk they are from) that would help you to convince this relative of the importance of getting vaccinated. Outline your talking points using full sentences.
Note: This is meant to be a very rough draft of a letter or conversation plan; it does not need to be a well-polished or researched essay to your relative. You can make some assumptions or leave blanks for data that you would want to gather before actually meeting with this relative. For example:
- Willer’s comment about moral values means that I should consider how my relative’s values are different from my own. My values are belief in scientific recommendations, … (name a few) and my relative’s values are freedom to decide, … (name a few)
Submissions should be 2 pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt font, and 1 inch margins.
Rubric: good English writing skills 10%, 3 principles/ideas described with talking points 90%
These TedTalks are about having difficult conversations with people who do not think like you. Watch all 3 of them for this assignment. These speakers raise points about good communication that span all circumstances, not just the ones they use to illustrate them.
